G20 – Erdoğan meets Xi Jinping ahead of Summit

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is scheduled to meet his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping ahead of G20 Summit which will be taking place in Eastern China.

The G20 is set to take place between Sunday 4th and Monday 5th September 2016. President Erdoğan and President Xi Jinping’s closed meeting can be viewed as in indication of Erdoğan’s aspirations to continue to improve relationships with countries beyond the European Union.

President Erdoğan is also expected to meet with US President Barak Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discus the ongoing conflict in Syria and the response to the current refugee crisis in Europe.

Early in August President Erdoğan met with President Putin in and attempt to restore economic ties since the downing of a Russian jet in November 2015. The Russian President told President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in St Petersburg “The priority is to get back to the pre-crisis level of co-operation”.

This meeting between Erdoğan and Xi Jinping is a positive step from Turkey as they continue to strengthen ties across the globe and beyond the troubled European Union.
